It is commonly called a "round", because different singers can start the song fresh at the start of each measure. It is a form of canon. This really isn't much of a trick; the notes of every measure are harmonious with the same chord and so any measure will 'work' when sung against any other measure. Old McDonald works as a round as well. Even though you can sing it with harmonized accompaniment that includes other chords, the melody works equally well sung only to the tonic chord. Don't try it with "America The Beautiful", though.
