Was the man called Leather Apron Jack The Ripper?

Without a doubt he was not. The man known as Leather Apron was a local shoemaker named John Pizer. When panick was at its highest anyone that wore a leather apron or used a knife in his line of work could very likely become a Ripper suspect. This is exactly what happened to Pizer. After being questioned and then released by the police the public decided Pizer had to be the Ripper and had the man not run and hid he most likely would have been strung up by the crowd. For quite a while after being questioned, Pizer had to stay out of sight for his own safety.

Where did Leather Apron come from regarding Jack the Ripper?

John Pizer was a local bootmaker who worked and lived in the Whitechapel district of London. He was known to have a violent temper and had prior to the murders been abusive to the local "working girls". He caught the eye of Scotland Yard because of a small piece of a leather apron found at one of the crime scenes. During the Autumn of Fear in 1888 vigilante justice was very nearly the end of Leather Apron when he had to flee for his life after being questioned by detectives. He was later cleared of any suspicion but the angry crowd would certainly have strung him up to the nearest tree if they could have. Whether this scrape with death scared Pizer enough to reform his nasty habits is not known and he faded into obscurity.

Who was the first suspect in the case of Jack The Ripper?

The one fact that stays constant is there has never been a shortage of suspects. In retrospect there where very few that could be classified as serious suspects. The detectives that worked the case had their own favorites, as did most English citizens. John Pizer, aka Leather Apron, was one of the earliest 'person of interest' to detectives. Pizer was almost a victim of vigilante justice. Angry mobs wanted his head in a noose long before a fair trial occured. Aaron Kozminski fell under suspicion but he was not available for several of the murders due to confinement in an asylum for the mentally ill. Others were Michael Ostrog and Montegue John Druitt. In the hundred plus years since the Ripper walked the streets of Whitechapel, the list of possible killers numbers in the hundreds. From doctors to furriers to butchers or the theory of a Jill The Ripper, to a member of the royal family. Unfortunatly, the vast majority of these have not stood the test of time.

Was Jack The Ripper Jewish?

In 1888 London, there was much name-calling and finger pointing, most of it toward the Jewish community in the Whitechapel district. But reguardless of personal prejudices toward Jews, there is absolutely no evidence that Jack The Ripper was Jewish. Several of what some consider 'serious' suspects were Jewish. Aaron Kosminski and Michael Ostrog have been named repeatedly as suspects in the 120 years since the Ripper's crimes began. 'Leather Apron', or John Pizer as he was known in his everyday life, became a 'scapegoat' for the hysterical masses and was almost lynched by anti-semetic citizens. The important thing to remember in a cold case such as this, stick to the facts, reject all undocumented information, and the Ripper suspect list will be amazingly short.
