Cells do not replicate "In DNA". Cells replicate their DNA during the process of cell division.
The DNA only needs to replicate if the cell is going to divide. In a dividing cell the DNA must replicate in order to provide a complete copy of the genome to each new cell.
An organism that lost the ability to replicate its DNA would be unable to reproduce and pass on its genetic material to offspring, leading to its eventual extinction. If an organism never had the ability to replicate its DNA, it would not be able to grow, develop, or carry out essential biological functions necessary for survival.
A strand of DNA can be "unzipped" on its own or by human intervention to replicate. This process does not harm the DNA and provides a carbon copy of itself.
The DNA double helix is unwound and each strand acts as a template for a new double helix.
