A lead-acid storage cell (which is what I assume you're talking about) should have, at minimum, the "Corrosive" label.
The hazard lights get their power from the battery so if the battery is dead they will not work.

It will vary from car to car, but the neg is usually black, and has a "-" sign. Normally the positive terminal is larger than the negative terminal.
Try putting in a new battery and then making sure the hazard switch is off.
