"Kidney Doctors", also known as urologists, have many different ways of helping patients with kidney stones.

If the stone is not causing any blocking or damage, many doctors will just treat the pain symptoms with a strong prescription pain killer and wait for the stone to pass.

They will also most likely order a urine test or a blood test to see if you have any abnormalities in your urine or blood that may point to the source of the stones. For instance, a low citric-acid content may cause kidney stones and the doctor would advise you to start a diet higher in citric acid to prevent new stones from forming.

Sometimes the stone is too big to get out of the kidney, or there is blockage, and the doctors may perform lithotripsy. In this procedure, the doctor uses an ultrasound machine (which uses sound waves) to break the stone into tiny parts. This way, the small particles can be passed safely.

In other cases, if the kidney stone is in the ureter or near the bladder, the doctor may actually go up with a small tube and "grab" the kidney stone. The patient is put under Anesthesia and the doctor collects the stone.

If you have small kidney stones you can try drinking a lot of water to help them pass. If they are larger, you will want to see your doctor for pain medication. Passing a stone can be very painful.

What are kidneys stones?

Kidney stones occur when crystals form inside the kidney. They begin microscopically small, and grow over time. Most stones are passed as tiny grains of sand, while others may grow as large as a golf ball or more, or look like the horns of a moose (staghorn kidney stones). There are many reasons some people develop kidney stones. Medications can cause the development of some types of stones, as can some illnesses. The congenital condition medullary sponge kidney disease often results in stones formed so frequently that passing them is almost a daily occurrence. Most stones are the result of a metabolic imbalance. Sometimes the metabolic imbalance can be treated, sometimes it can't. A common way to treat patients for recurrent kidney stones is potassium citrate, which makes it less likely for certain stones to form inside the kidney. Some stones are the result of an imbalanced diet which may be easily altered without medication to help.

What diagnosis could you have if you had gallbladder and appendix removed and now having pain near right kidney?

Possible kidney stones or an inflammation of your kidney. It also could be something with your intestines. If its kidney stones and they are small they will eventually pass from your kidney based simply on gravity. You may have some burning or possibly a little bright red blood when urinating and that could indicate you passed the kidney stone. If they are larger then you will probably need to have the process where they use something like an ultrasound in order to help them along. The worst case senario of course is surgery but that it pretty rare. It's very common for people that no longer have their gallbladder to get kidney stones. If it continues to cause you a lot of pain you might want to get seen by a doctor.
