The human body has a number of natural defenses against infection and other dangers. Some of these are visible and some are not. The most obvious and visible of these defenses is our skin. The skin is what is described as a "semi-permeable" barrier. It is nearly impossible for bacteria or other pathogens to enter the skin when it is healthy and intact.
In fact, in all the places where the body comes into contact with the outside environment, there are ingenious defenses always at the ready. Deep inside the lungs, there are special cells that monitor the air coming in. If a pathogenic organism or chemical enters the lungs, these cells are able to capture it and either destroy it or wall it off so that it can't roam free. In the gut, similar cells do a similar job - monitoring the environment for any trouble, then acting to remove the danger.
Inside the human bloodstream, a miracle of protection is occurring all the time. Circulating in our blood are antibodies, little proteins whose job is to detect dangerous organisms and direct a defensive response against them. Also circulating in the blood are specialized cells that also detect invaders and destroy them, basically by eating them. Furthermore, our blood and any unwelcome materials are constantly filtered through certain organs, like the liver and spleen, that serve as filters, removing the contaminants.
When it comes to injury, our bodies are built in a way that gives us maximum mobility while protecting vital structures. The ribs provide a bony yet flexible shelter for the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys. A wall of muscle tissue and a curtain of fat tissue protect our intestines. Our skull protects our brain.
Finally, our muscular tissues are built for protecting ourselves from attackers, or running from them at high speed, if necessary.
Our bodies are amazing in their natural effectiveness at protecting us from an often unsafe world.
