When an atom gains or loses electrons, it gains a negative or positive charge respectively. Atoms generally try to gain enough electrons to fill their outer, valence electron shell. For the first shell the number of electrons is 2 and for all others, atoms usually want 8 electrons.
An ION. Ions are divided into two classes. CATIONS ;positive ions e.g. Na^(+) ANIONS ; negative ions e.g Cl^(-)
It either gains, loses, or shares electrons.
When an atom gains electrons, negatively charged anions are formed. When an atom loses electrons, positively charged cations are formed.

Ion
An ions is formed when an atom gains or loses electrons.
Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons. When an atom loses electrons the Ion that is formed has a positive charge.
An atom that gains or loses electrons is called an ion. If it gains electrons, it results in a negative ion called an anion. If it loses electrons, it results in a positive ion called a cation.
When an atom loses or gains electrons, it becomes an ion.
An ionic bond.
