The above answer from one of our contributors is certainly an important historic event. Here are two additional events that had long term affects:

A. In 1453 The Ottoman Turks established a Muslim empire by conquering the Byzantium Empire. They captured the capital city of Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul;

B. Under the flag of Spain, Christopher Columbus set sail to find a new route to the far east and "ran into" the Western Hemisphere by mistake. This voyage was remarkable & historic as it led Western European nations to stake out new territorial claims in an hemisphere whose native inhabitants could not defend. The military power of the Europeans forced native American civilizations and Tribes allow European settlements;

C. In China, the Ming dynasty reached new heights in the sphere of economics & cultural development; and

D. In 1492, Spain's royal families drove the Moors out of their last holdings in the Iberian Peninsula, thus leaving a united Spain under the rule of Ferdinand & Isabella; and

E. In 1453, the Spanish Inquisition was established. This resulted in a number of tragedies in Spain.
