While it may certainly be useful to tap into the wealth of knowledge made available by trained and educated scholars (for there are many scholars who have been called to delve deeply into interpretive work and Biblical research,) there is always a danger in dedication to scholarship that we might place scholarship over the truth it is meant to illuminate.

This is evident in the myriad of scholarly work that twists the gospels and the knowledge about Jesus into something it was not meant to be, or into something which is outright false. We have to be careful in what we believe from people who interpret the gospel. But this is where faith appears: if there is no living God behind scripture, we are left to put all our faith in our own guesswork about what it means. If there is a God who gives truth, then we can take all biblical scholarship and interpretations with a careful mind and wait for God to help show us the truth behind it. This is the best remedy for avoiding going overboard with improper interpretations.

The Catholic Church is the Body of Christ Incarnate on earth (see Acts 9 where Christ tells Saul that he is persecuting ME), as such He has guaranteed it until the end of the world (Matthew 16:17-19, Matthew 28:20), set His Vicar over it (St. Peter and his successors (Matthew 16:17-19)) and it is the only normal way that God communicates grace regularly to His followers. As The Bible is totally dependent on the Church as well as the beliefs of Christian scholars, the only one with would hold precedence would be the Church, on which the Bible and the scholars both depend. In other words, Christ holds precedence.

Which one of the four New Testament Gospels according to Matthew Mark Luke and John is considered by biblical scholars to be the first one written?

Biblical scholars say that the first gospel to be written was the Gospel of Mark. The clear evidence of this is that the authors of both Matthew and Luke copied much of Mark's Gospel verbatim in the Greek language. They say that analysis shows that Mark is not copied from either Matthew or Luke, and that the author of Luke was not aware of Matthew's Gospel. Thus, Mark must have been written before Matthew and Luke. John's Gospel is believed to have been inspired by Luke's Gospel, with some material taken direct from Mark.

Why is the social gospel movement important?

Social gospel can be defined in different ways. One definition is "the application of Christian beliefs to social problems," which can include a variety of Christian views and actions in the application of Christian beliefs, some of which even non-Christians would agree are beneficial for application to social issues. One that could make a big difference is the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Another is helping the poor. Concepts such as those are important in helping to solve social issues.

Did Saint Matthew write the first gospel?

No. Scholars have demonstrated that Mark's Gospel was written first, and that Matthew's Gospel was partly based on the contents of Mark's Gospel. Matthew's Gospel was originally written anonymously and only attributed to St Matthew later in the second century. However, scholars say that Matthew could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events it portrays. The disciple Matthew did not write any of the gospels.
