17. Luis Miñoz Rivera birthday (third Monday in July) - Politcal activist who fought to gain autonomy from Spain. When the US took Puerto Rico from Spain in 1898 he became the resident Commissioner of PR in US Congress and instrumental in gaining U.S. Citizenship for Puerto Ricans with the Jones Act of 1917.

There are many more religious holidays here that have been secularized but are not official and though they are celebrated the work days are not interrupted.
All US Federal Holidays, seventeen Official Puerto Rican holidays and the unofficial week off for Carnival.
Puerto Rico does not celebrate it's independence, because it is not independent. What it does celebrate is the formation of the Commonwealth in July 25.
