There are actually three classes of hormones produced by the ovaries. Each class contains several chemicals that work in similar ways. Oestrogens and progesterones are two classes known to be "female" hormones. In addition to these, the ovaries also produce androgens, a class considered to be male hormones because of their association with male characteristics and the higher levels found in men.
