One extinct horse breed is the Tarpan, a feral horse that became extinct in 1876. They were small, pony-sized, but very hardy. The Tarpan has been recreated through breeds it influenced, but it is not exactly the same.

There is actually an average for how old a horse is for each breed (because the life span for each breed is different) but I breed Arabians and we had an old mare, she lived to be 34. Sounds ancient, I know!
