In all probability the end of the world will come gradually, as the sun cools and becomes dark, leaving the earth as a cold and lifeless rock circling the sun. At what point will we say the earth can no longer support life? And do we mean Greenwich Mean Time or Eastern Standard Time (if they still have any meaning in a few billion years time).

It is not going to end. There have always been people who said that the world was going to end. In 1834 there was a man who preached that he found a date in The Bible of when the world was going to end ( sound like today?). He said it was in 1843 and that people had to wear white clothing and quit sinning. He preached this for 10 years. A few people began to believe him so they made white clothing and waited. The day came in 1843 and nothing happened, so he went back to his bible. He said he found that he was wrong on the date and it wasn't 1843 but 1844, so he told people to wear white clothing and to get ready. A few more began to believe him so much that farmers didn't plant the spring crops because they wouldn't need to. Some spent all of their savings. The day came, people got dressed, and waited on mountain tops to be taken to Heaven. Nothing happened and about noon they went back to cold houses, and unplanted fields to begin life again.
