An equine veterinarian's hours tend to vary by season. In the late winter and early spring, during the foaling season, an equine veterinarian may work 80 to 100 hours a week covering emergencies, new foal exams and checking mares to see when they will be ready to breed again. From mid spring through early summer, the hours drop back somewhat to perhaps 60 to 80 hours a week getting horses ready for the show or racing season. Mid fall to mid winter tends to be a slower time - there are relatively few shows or events and the breeding season won't start for another couple of months - so an equine vet may be working 40 to 60 hours a week at this time.
