Education:

This varies by jurisdiction, but many require specialized courses relevant to the field of policing. Criminology, for example, is a very common course for people seeking a future in law enforcement. As for level of education, some agencies require only a high-school diploma, while some require a college degree.

General Attributes:

Police forces tend to focus on integrity, honesty, physical fitness and psychological stability when choosing new recruits. Many agencies include psychological and aptitude testing in their selection process. Time management and conflict resolution skills are crucial to any Policing environment. Keen observation skills and attention to detail are also critical.

Criminal Behavior:

A minor criminal conviction does not automatically preclude you from becoming a Police officer. Most forces understand that people make mistakes. Having spent a night in the drunk tank a few years ago, having been in a minor bar fight in college, or having been arrested for shoplifting as a teenager will usually not prevent you from becoming a Police Officer.

Specialized skills:

Weapons use, arrest techniques, officer safety procedures, driving skills and knowledge of the law are usually part of the training that the force will provide through their own indoctrination program, however previous experience is often considered a great asset.
