British Naturalist Charles Darwin visited Galapagos Islands in 1835. During his visit he observed that difference species were in a constant battle of survival with each other, and there was a variation in between tortoise on the sand and those in the water.
Darwin observed that on the island, there were many finches, but each one of them were slightly different.Darwin noticed that beak shapes and sizes differed among the finches. This led him to believe that finches evolved differently in response to different environments.The variation in beak size and body size that showed, at a latter date, that all of these birds he thought were vastly different species (wrens, warblers and such ) were one ancestral finch species adapted to many different niches on the many different Islands of the Galapagos.

While Charles Darwin was in Galapagos, he visited the islands of Floreana, Isabela, San Cristóbal, and Santiago only.

Variation?!?! That was an obvious observation of naturalists that opposed Darwin's concepts totally. Unless you mean the heritability that leads to variation? Explaining that variation was the problem. Creationists of the time explained this by positing god's whimsy in designing his species, but this was shown to be nonsense as natural processes are at work in variation and this can be shown experimentally. The concept of natural selection explained how that natural variation was selected on beneficial traits. What Darwin did not understand is how that variation was passed on to progeny. His explanation was wrong.

You cannot. The average is the mean of a number of observation, and each individual observation cannot be uncovered. We therefore also often study "Variation" or "Standard Deviation" being the sum of square of each observation and the average. You get the Standard deviation by tracting the square root of the variance. Thsi indicates the "spread" of the values.
It tells you about the size of variation relative to the size of the observation, and it has the advantage that the coefficient of variation is independent of the units of observation. Here is a example to help you see it. If you have a data set with weights, the value of the standard deviation of a set of weights will be different depending on whether they are measured in grams or lbs or micrograms etc. For example if you look at the weights of kids from birth to 18 years, some countries measure in lbs other in kg and some even use stones. The coefficient of variation, however, will be the same in both cases as it does not depend on the unit of measurement. So you can obtain information about the children's weight variation around the world by using the coefficient of variation to look at all the ratios of standard deviations to mean in each country. To compute it we look the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean .
