Taking (theft) is a crime. Unless you are being accused or questioned by law enforcement acting on the complaint of the victim, anything else is just idle speculation on the part of the accuser. You can protest your innocence all you want however, there is no way to PROVE that you DIDN'T take it.
It is impossible to prove a negative!
If this is the case you are faced with, unfortunatley there is notihnig you can do about someone exercising their free speech UNLESS it rises to the level of libel or slander.
If they continue - call their bluff - preferably in front of wtinesses - confront them and tell them to either stop making idle accusations or go ahead and report it to the police.
Stealing is illegal because you are taking something that is someone elses, they worked hard for it and someone is just taking it when they didnt work for it. if you have permission to have it then it is not stealing however.

If someone said they beat you up but they didnt, the thing to do is tell the truth. If the person truly beat you, there would have been blood or bruises. If there aren't any, then people will know someone lied.
