A dog uses its whiskers as a very sensitive sensory device. It lets the animal know when something is too close to its face, what direction the wind is blowing, etc... If you clip these whiskers you will limit the dog's ability to respond to its surroundings.
Whiskers are specialized hairs on either side of a dog's snout. Your pet uses her whiskers to guide her through brush and access scents more accurately. Cutting them off generally does not cause fur loss unless the shaver or clippers irriate the sensitive skin of the muzzle. People who show dogs regularly trim off the animals' whiskers to create a neat, streamlined look. This does no physical harm; however, since this practice limits the canine's ability to relate to her world, you might consider not doing it unless you own a show dog.
It is not a big deal -- dogs do not need their whiskers to function; their purpose is to tell a dog when its face is close to something, and if you accidentally cut off one, it will grow back and in the meantime, the dog has plenty more.
We are really not sure. If it really hurt them, you would think that they would react, but most do not, leaving us to believe that cutting them gives them no pain.
