What products are effective at removing odors from a dog pen?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cedar chips are a good way to keep odors down. Pens must be cleaned out every day. I have a doggy run and two dogs, so I clean that run twice a day and also put cedar chips down and there is no smell. Cedar chips are a decent option for outdoor pens in dry areas. However, for concrete pens, or indoor runs I've only come across a couple things that really work well. One is a product called Natures Miracle... really wonderful stuff. I couldn't recommend it more highly than I do. The other option is to use a vinegar rinse. Typically, 1/2 vinegar to 1/2 water... really wet everything down... and then rinse really well with plain water afterwards. You don't want to leave any vinegar residue or smell behind. There are a lot of good cleaning products out there with that special enzyme that removes odors Petastic and Natures Miracle are really similar actually they were the same thing at one time Petastic got to keep the name Natures Miracle has the formula but there both good. Also Pet Friendly is good too!

How soon can a dog be groomed after neuter?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Neutered is the name of the process done to male dogs.

Which makes your question unclear.

You could be asking about at which age male puppies can be neutered.

Or you could be asking about how soon after giving birth a female dog can be spayed.

Different questions, different answers.

Spaying a dog that has given birth = Once the puppies are weaned.

Spaying or neutering puppies, the suggestion is between 4-6 months. Basically as close to, but prior to, the age of sexual maturity. I feel that neutering and spaying too young (6-8 weeks) may have adverse effects on the pup's "emotional" stability. Speaking from experience.

Neutering an adult male dog can happen anytime regardless of what's happening in any pregnancy the male dog has caused.

How do you stop dogs casting?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If by casting you mean running from left to right, and running to either side over some side, I would use that natural casting for search work Casualty detection or putting up game. that casting is something we sometimes have to work hard to get a dog to do, so if it does it naturally then use it to work the dog. To stop it, the second, yes the very second you let him off, turn you back on him and walk away, in the opposite direction, as soon as he catches you up turn around and walk away again, and keep that up, so you become the leader and he becomes the follower, DO NOT SHOUT his name or call him otherwise you become a lighthouse and he will know where you are all the time, keep quiet, make him the apprehensive one not you as I guess you are at the moment, make him feel lost, walk away every time he starts to feel comfortable in the knowledge that you are there. Use fear, in other words make him think you are discarding him from your pack, no (well there are a few, Cats being one) like to be thrown out of the pack, they are uncomfortable on their own vulnerable and libel to get attacked. They all feel more comfortable in a pack, and the stronger the pack leader the happier they feel.

How many times should you brush your dog and what kind of brush?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends what type of dog you have. If your dog is double-coated (which means the dog in question has either a fluffy, silky coat, or a very soft sheeps-wool type coat) you would want to use a bristle brush, a double-coat brush, and most likely a pair of scissors to cut out any mats in the pooches' fur. For a single-coated dog, you want to use a plain slicker brush.

Why do some dogs nails grow faster than others?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, but regular trimming is essential to your dog's foot health. They will become too long otherwise and cause problems with walking. You should trim them regularly, but only a bit at a time so that you don't cut into the quick and cause your dog pain.

Do long toenails cause problems for dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They do. Long nails can make it difficult and uncomfortable for your dog to walk. And if left long enough, some will curl over and grow into your pet's pads, which will require surgery to correct. It's recommended that you clip your dog's nails about every month or so.

How do you wash your dog?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your toy dog probably needs to be bathed about once a week, but ask your veterinarian. Here's how to do it: Supplies: bathtub, towels, washcloths, dog shampoo, dog conditioner, brush, comb, ribbons, hair dryer. (Italicized items optional.) 1. You should not bathe toy dogs the way you bathe regular dogs. The bathtub is to big for them if you are not in there with them. NEVER throw them into a swimming pool. You could bathe them in the sink like cats, but most bathroom sinks are rounded and the dog will slip. It is usually better to use a small plastic container or a baby swimming pool or bathub. No deep buckets. (NEVER bathe pets in the kitchen sink. Your kitchen sink actually contains more germs than the one in your bathroom.) 2. After you select the bathtub, fill it with warm water. It should come no higher than doggy's chest. Most toy dogs get cold and shiver, especially Chihuahuas. Make sure it is not too hot. Your dog could get burned! Don't bathe your dog in warmer water than you would bathe a small child in. 3. Lift up your toy dog and gently lower him into the water. It is normal for him to seem a little nervous, bark, or squirm and try to get out, especially if it is his first bath. But if he barks very loudly, or goes into a fit, or shakes uncontrollably, there might be a problem. Retest the water temperature. Use your hands or get a cup and wet his fur. Do NOT pour water over his head. Squeeze some doggy shampoo into your hand and gently massage it into his fur all over his body. NEVER use soap or shampoo on your dog that his made for cats or other animals. You may use a cloth to wet doggy's head and gently rub a sparing amount of shampoo over it. Avoid getting soap or water near or in his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. 4. Using your hands or a cup, pour water over your dog's body to rinse off the shampoo. Conditioner is optional at this stage. (If your dog has long hair or a very matted or tangled coat, you may want to try it.) Apply the conditioner like you did the shampoo and rinse it off the same way. Make sure ALL shampoo and conditioner gets off. (It can stay on your dog's coat and make it sticky or flaky.) After you rinse the body, use a wet cloth and wipe the shampoo or conditioner off his head head. Then, with a clean, non-soapy cloth, take the corner and very gently wipe his mouth, nose, ears, and the corners of his eyes. 5. Lift your toy out of the tub and place him on a large, fluffy towel. (You may want to put the towel in the dryer first so it will be warm for doggy.) Gently dry your dog and then warp him loosely and hold him in your arms to let the towel soak up more water. (This also prevents the dog from shaking.) 6. Set your dog down on the towel again and blow dry him. Make sure the air is not coming out too hard and it is not too hot! 7. Now you may brush or comb his fur. Careful not too pull too hard on knots or brush his skin too hard! Now you can style his fur if you want to with ribbons or other accessories. Bathtime is also a good time to take care of nailclipping and toothbrushing, but remember, his teeth need to be brushed everyday. You might reward your dog with a treat if he has had good behavior during his bath.

What dog breeds are non shedding?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

All dogs shed hair, even the "hairless" breeds. They must shed their coats to make room for new fur. Some dogs shed less, or have shorter or less hair, or they shed the same amount but their wiry or double coat holds the hair that is shed until you brush it out with regular grooming. That leaves less hair behind on people, clothing, and houses.

Don't believe all that people say when they advertise a certain breed as being non shedding, is not true. That would be like your keeping the same exact hairs you were born with for life and never losing any, it is a physical impossibility, individual hairs do not last forever.

Some dog breeds that fit one or more of the "low shedding" categories above are: Airedale Terrier, Border Terrier, Chinese Crested, Lakeland Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Puli, Komondor, Welsh Terrier, Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Short Haired Dachshund, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Welsh Corgi, and Toy Poodle.

If you are asking because you or someone else you know has allergies or asthma, then it's not the fur/hair, it's the dander from the skin of the dog that usually triggers the allergic response (and sometimes the proteins in saliva or urine cause the allergic responses). See related questions below about dander and allergies.

More:

Hair cells on all mammals grow to a particular length depending on where the cell is on the body, then the hair shaft falls out and a new hair grows.

On long-haired dogs the hair grows longer before it is shed than it does on short-haired dogs. So the number of hairs shed will be more in short haired dogs over a given period of time, although the long hair piles up more and is more obvious.

Dogs that are brushed and washed often, will have loose or shed hairs removed during this grooming, so less hair tends to be shed in unwanted places at other times when proper grooming is done. The hair on regularly clipped dogs gets cut to a short length before it is shed, so is less noticeable, as is the shed hair from a naturally short-haired dog.

Other Information About Breeds Of Dogs That Have Less Problems with Shedding:
  • All varieties of Poodles are low shedding. Poodles are being cross-bred with other breeds of dogs for this reason, and some results are the Cocka-Poo and Labradoodle. Labradoodles are also said to be a great pet for those who have allergies.
  • Bichon Frise is a good breed for low shedding.
  • Shih-Tzu's are also known not to shed as frequently. Their hair continually grows, so you need to get it cut periodically. It is also easier to care for if you have it in a pet cut rather than show grooming. Shorter pet cuts create less noticeable hair on things.
  • A Wheaten Terrier is a good choice if shedding is an issue.
  • Portugese Water Dogs are low shedding and also have the added advantage of being well tolerated by many people with allergies.
  • The Afghan Hound doesn't shed more, but the very long hair is able to accumulate to look like more around the house. They are also a poor choice for those with dog allergies.

A short list of some of the dog breeds that shed lightly, or have other characteristics of their coats that make them better for those who want to avoid shedding hair from their dogs, are:

When can newborn puppies have a bath?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The mother canine will tend for her young ... it's best not to handle these puppies until they are "weaned" from their mother - about eight weeks after birth. If the parent dog is not doing this, contact your veterinarian for advice.
