It's a matter of individual choice and a person's religious beliefs. If one believes in God, then the couple would want to get married under the eyes of God. Some people believe a Marriage Certificate is simply a piece of paper and prefer to live together common law. I preferred having been married under the eyes of God because I am a Christian and I'm making a serious commitment. I don't take marriage lightly. I was divorced once after 3 1/2 years and it bothered me even though I was not the cause of grounds for divorce, but, I doubt God would want anyone to stay in an abusive relationship. We are to love and respect each other married or not. I married a second time and have been happily married for almost 36 years. My husband and I have love and respect for each other and we believe in commitment.
Firstly, they would still be considered married with respect to their originating state's laws. However, most states where gay marriage is banned also would not recognize the couple's marriage. This also means that the couple will not be able to get divorced in that state.
I believe if you really love someone, you can. If you believe that person is the right one that will treat you with the same respect you do than YES!
