I'm in the exact same situation here and all I can advise you to do is not judge. The person you like may not have gotten the few hints you dropped about your feelings or is slightly doubtful. All you can do is assure them in subtle ways since if rumours are true, they prefer another person. In most cases, the only reason they "chose" another is because they wanted to be appreciated and that person was the easiest path to fulfilling that need. I'm sure you can prove what a great person you are with time.
