Baby deer, or fawns, are born without a scent which helps protect them from being eaten. After a fawn is born, it must lie hidden on the ground for hours while the mother grazes and gathers energy to produce milk because they are too small and weak to run form danger. Later each evening, the mother will return and let the fawn nurse. If the fawn had a scent, predators would easily be able to smell the tiny deer on the ground and it would become their prey.
