When they are in a good mood and not trying to show off, nicely say "I love the way we used to be, but we are growing apart. I would like to end this friendship." Be calm, and don't make a huge deal of it. Feel free to discuss it. After you have kindly agreed to separate, start making friends that you know you will be better for you. Also, if your friends are being so weird and crazy about attention, they will probably get very little.
