In April, 1793, Eli Whitney created the cotton gin. This increased the need for slave labor drastically.
On one hand, the Cotton Gin that Eli Whitney invented reduced slave labor because previously pciking the seeds out of the cotton was hard work. However, once the gin was developed more and more cotton could be grown and produced because of all the time it saved, so the planting and farming of the cotton led to the need for more land and slaves.

Mass production didn't exist until the 1900's. Whitney invented the cotton gin which allowed the removal of cotton seeds from the cotton bolls. This in turn meant that more cotton was grown and the need for slaves grew as the cotton grew.
