She had to travel to London England to get her works published as no American publisher would do. Some Americans , such a Thomas Jefferson, did not give her rave reviews while other Americans did. One particular poem titled "To His Excellency George Washington" in 1775, that Mr. Washington invited her to his home in Mount Vernon VA in 1776. Her poetry is probably the first in line under the heading "African-American Literature." She passed away at a young age of 31.
