With the First Punic War Rome gained control of western Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, this had been Carthaginian territories. Rome also built a powerful navy.

With the second Punic War Rome took over the Carthaginian territories in southern Spain and its silver mines which had been the main source of wealth of Carthage. The Numidians of Algeria switched their alliance from Carthage to Rome. Rome also had alliances with Greek colonies (settlements) on the coasts of southern France and Catalonia. Therefore, Rome gained control of the western basin of the Mediterranean.

With the Third Punic War Rome destroyed Carthage, even though her power was no longer a match for her. In the same year, Rome also annexed mainland Greece. At the time of the First Punic War, Rome had got involved in a war in Greece and had made alliances with some Greek states. She then was involved in three more wars in Greece to support her allies during conflicts between Greek states. In the end it was decided to annex Greece to end the political instability there and secure Roman control. Subsequently Rome expanded further into the eastern Mediterranean as a result of the bequeath of two kingdoms in western Turkey and wars waged against her by Mithridates VI, the king of Pontus (in northeastern Turkey).
