The Romans revolutionised British agriculture. The creation of Roman towns created markets for local agricultural goods. The presence of the Roman legions led to the formation of civilian settlements near their fort as the soldiers also provided a market for local goods. After 20 years of service, the soldiers were discharged and given the grant of a plot of land to farm. Usually they took up land where they were stationed and married local women. There are records of Roman veterans marrying British women.

The Romans also built roads, baths, theatres and amphitheatres .Being part of the Roman Empire plugged Britain into the wider empire.
