Prior to the invention of the typewriter most secretaries were men. Men went to business schools and were scribes. They enjoyed communicating in fine handwriting and were less inclined to learn to use the new machines. Consequently, women were trained to become typists and doors opened to them that had previously been closed. Often, both the typewriter and the typist came to a new office, as a package deal. By a 1910 census in the US, over 80 percent of typists were female.
