the purpose of black hole is still a mystery but one thing for sure is that they have a very strong gravity in the middle of the black hole. some says these gravity is what holding galaxy together and that the centre of the galaxy including the Milky Way is a black hole. This could means that Earth itself could be circling around a black hole for all we know it. Without it, our galaxy would fall and split apart and the Milky Way will not exist.

Why were black holes named that?
The idea is that nothing can escape the black hole, not even light - so they might be quite dark. However, if matter falls into the black hole, it gets accelerated so much, before reaching the event horizon, that it emits a lot of radiation - as a result, some "black holes" are among the brightest objects in the Universe! However, for now it is impossible to verify this. =========================== According to hyper sphere theory it suggest so i.e. the universe is like the event horizon of another universe from a 4 D universe's black hole.
