When Elizabeth I was only three years old, her mother, Anne Boleyn (c1501-07 to 1536) the second wife of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547), was beheaded on 19 May 1536 at the Tower of London. Anne had been found guilty of trumped up charges of witchcraft, incest and adultery, all seen as treason. But her main fault in Henry's eyes was that she was not able to produce a male heir.
