Harper's Ferry was the second Armory (Springfield was the first).
When the south captured it they acquired the machinery and tools to make rifles identical to the Union rifles.
It is Harper´s Ferry. John Brown was a famous abolitionist of the American Civil War. He decided to attack the federal arsenal of Harper´s Ferry with a group of 18 other men. This ended with a battle between his men and Robert E Lee´s men, and he was wounded and forced to surrender. This event was one of the causes of the Civil War.
On October 16, 1859 John Brown and 21 followers arrived at Harpers Ferry. Brown had killed slavery supporters in the Kansas Territory, and then he wanted to spark a slave revolt in Virginia. Brown and his men attacked and captured the federal arsenal, where the weapons were stored. They took hostages, but no slaves came to join the revolt. United States Marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee rushed to Harpers Ferry to capture John Brown, put him on trial and execute him. The South (Confederacy) were shocked by his violent acts. His raid started the tension between the North (Union) and the South (Confederacy). Later, many white Southerners blamed the North for Brown's acts. That is the first event that triggered the Civil War.
The southern states thought the Harper's Ferry Raid was typical abolitionist behavior - trying to stir-up violent revolution. The southerners saw the event as a threat to stability and peace, and an indicator that the slavery issue would never be resolved, except through combat. The Harper's Ferry Raid offered secessionists an argument which was used to hasten secession - that the raid served as an example of abuse towards the south and warned of the danger of black insurrection. The South also reorganized the militia system, making the South better prepared for war.

John Brown's capture of the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry.
The big event that occurred there was part of the Civil War: in 1859, a white abolitionist named John Brown tried to start an armed rebellion of slaves. He and twenty men conducted a raid on a US arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (in some books, the town back then did not have an apostrophe, and was written Harpers Ferry); Brown hoped to capture enough weapons for the slave revolt. But the raid failed, as Col. Robert E. Lee thwarted Brown's attempt; Brown was wounded, and taken prisoner. He was later executed. But Brown's efforts as well as his passionate defense of his actions when he was being tried, inflamed many opponents of slavery, and they vowed to carry on the fight.

Lincoln said that Harpers Ferry was not a slave insurrection, but rather "an attempt by white men to get up a revolt among slaves, in which the slaves refused to participate." He explained that Southerners had attempted time and time again since the event to make political capital out of it. Lincoln claimed it was the perfect example of the South's attempt to "rule or ruin."
