In general it is a good idea to run a scan of the hard disk(s) to ensure that the directory (folder) structure was not damaged by an incomplete update.
From MyComputer (Windows Explorer) select the hard disk (usually C:), right click on it and select Properties at the end of the list. You will get a display with two or more tabs - select the 'Tools' tab then run 'Check Now'. the scan will usually take just a few minutes. Normally there will be no problems or only simple problems which the program will automatically fix.
You can run this from time to time anyway, it will do no harm, say about once a month.
Run a disc scan. Normally, when a computer shuts down it 'parks' the read head of the hard-drive to an unused area of the disk. Sudden power loss prevents this safety feature from activating before shut-down, and it's possible the hard-drive will have sustained damage.
Boot into safe mode. (Hold F8)
Usually when power failure occurs, corruption is imminent.

There are several ways to tell whe Windows updates their system. Usually, the first and easiest way is by simply rebooting his/her computer. As long as he/she is connected to the Internet, there will more than likely be a pop-up window that tells him/her stating that there is a new Windows update, prompting him/her to accept. It is as simple as clicking "yes" and rebooting his/her computer. However, if there is no pop-up, he/she may visit Windows' website, and click on "system update". This will open up the same pop-up download as before, asking if he/she would like to update the system. Once again, it is as simple as accepting.
