If it were not for the Nile river civilization would have been in possible in Egypt, they rely on the annual flood to make the surrounding soil fertile & for irrigation of their crops, one of the most famous being cotton, which is a very water hungry crop. The Blue Nile Lily ( I think it is known as, extremely rare these days, though hopefully not extinct in Egypt was thought to have been used as a mind altering drug, probably for religious purposes, research done on it a number of years ago supports its supposed properties.
