In the post-Civil War era, Ohio became an important industrial state. Iron ore was provided by the Great Lakes. (The lakes also provided an exporting route.) Steel manufacturing was once king in Ohio. Outsourcing and offshoring have meant that many of those manufacturing jobs have left Ohio.
