By 'the religion' I assume you mean Christianity but this answer applies to most monotheistic religions.
Religion influences almost every aspect of human social life. From how we deal with illness and death (prayer and burial) to how we acquire goods or consume services (Holiday and Sunday Business Hours.) It permeates both behavioral schemata (traditions) and our very language. Even our reflexive exclamations of pain and anger often have religious undertones.
In addition to the real-time effects every cultural tradition on Earth is marbled with the effects of dozens of religions stretching back to the dawn of recorded history. Wars, crusades, architectural projects, artistic movements, grand-scale humanitarian efforts, genocides and mass human migrations have all been directly caused by religious beliefs. Every culture that has ever existed (and had the written language to tell us about it) has placed large importance upon its religious beliefs.
Whether one accepts any given religion or not one would have to be a fool to imagine religion has not shaped mankind's history and will continue to shape its future.
Both, but mostly the latter.

Romans religion was not monotheistic. Like the religions of most ancient peoples, it was polytheistic. Early Roman religion was a variant of Latin religion with a degree of influence by the nearby Sabines and Etruscans and the Greeks of southern Italy.
