Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Church of Christian Science, suffered a great deal throughout her early life, eventually becoming dependent on morphine. One of the later influences on her was Phineas Parkhurst Quimby who taught healing the body through mental thoughts alone. While following Quimby in rejecting the efficacy of medicine, Eddy adopted a more radical theology for Christian Science, than that taught by him.
