He was a student of Socrates, credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and the teacher of Aristotle. Because Socrates was his mentor, it is believed by the uniformed that his ideas came from a Socratic way of thinking. While this is with out a doubt true, it is not the complete truth. Plato was also influenced by earlier philosophers, mainly Heraclitus, Parmenides, Zeno and the Pythagoreans(Pythagoras and his followers). As you will see, Plato had many basis that stemmed from the quintessential ideas of earlier philosophers. It quickly becomes apparent that Plato was a man who accepted many points of view and wove them all together in order to form a basis for his preachings and inevitably change philosophy forever.
While the ideas and influences of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle have had a significant impact on Western society, they are not the sole basis of its current structure. The evolution of Western thought has incorporated a wide range of influences beyond just these philosophers. While their contributions are important, modern Western society also draws from various other sources, including Enlightenment ideals, scientific advancements, and social movements.
Plato banned the flute from his ideal republic because he believed it was too emotional and could lead to irrational behavior. The flute was often used in the worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy, and Plato wanted to avoid any influences associated with his cults.
Plato banned the instrumental music of the aulos because it was commonly associated with the wild and emotional rituals of the cults of Dionysus, which he believed were corrupting influences on society. Plato believed that music should promote order and rationality in the soul, unlike the aulos which he saw as stirring up irrational passions.
During the Renaissance, there was a major resurgence of using classical learning from Greece. These influences included the likes of Plato and Socrates.
