In the years and even decades leading up to World War II, the most important influences upon Japan's empire-building effort may be described as follows. First, the Japanese were increasingly driven by the sense that their culture was superior -- to Western culture as well as to most other Asian cultures. Second, Japanese society was increasingly influenced (then, in the 1930s, mainly controlled) by its military leaders, who were very aggressive in pursuing imperial designs for the greater glory of Japan. Finally, as a nation with a modern military and growing industry, Japan sought to control the sources of all the raw materials that it needed.
