The current Lincoln penny was first produced in 1909. The first penny produced by the United States Mint was produced in 1793. The Continental Congress authorized the production of what is now referred to as the "Fugio Cent" in 1787, so that is arguably the first US penny. Prior to that point, individual states issued their own coins, including pennies.
Most of the colonies had issued coins earlier, but the first officially struck US coin was the 1793 Fugio Cent.
