With a pap smear you are asked to remove your underwear, you are asked to place your feet up in feet holders and asked to move your butt close to the edge of the reclined chair. The physician then puts a small amount of lubricant in your vagina area so he/she can enter what is called a speculum. It goes in smoothly with slight pressure and is opened just slightly inside the vagina in order for the doctor to see inside.

That is the main tool that is used. There is usually nothing else unless they have to do test. They have what is called swab test (which is most common) and they use long sticks with tiny swabs at the end to swab your vagina. They also have culture test (not as common as swab test) where they lightly scrape the vagina for samples. That type of test is usually done if you have continuously returned and they need to do a deeper study.

Hope this helps!

In taking a Pap smear, a tool is used to gathercells from the outer opening of the cervix (Latin for "neck") of the uterus and the endocervix. The cells are examined under a microscope to look for abnormalities. The test aims to detect potentially pre-cancerous changes (calledcervicalintraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical dysplasia), which are usually caused by sexually transmitted human papillpmaviruses (HPVs). The test remains an effective, widely used method for early detection of pre-cancer and Cervical cancer. The test may also detect infections and abnormalities in the endocervix and endometrium.

A pap smear requires a drape for patient privacy; a speculum and light; gloves; collection device and specimen transport device. Typically, the lab prefers that water be used for lubricant, but may allow certain other water-based lubricants.
