Nothing but years of snobbery and elitism and a series of tragic social problems to deal with
I believe that in the late stages of the Roman empire slavery was one of several serious problems the empire had to deal with. The number of slaves owned by wealthy citizens of the empire, allowed large farmlands and large herds of livestock were dealt with with cheap slave labor. Ordinary citizens could not compete with the price of goods produced by slave labor. This left many common citizens with no work to perform. It lent itself to a malaise among a large group of Romans. This also became a reason why the birth rate of citizens declined. This was one of several internal problems that the leadership people found it difficult to remedy.

This was a big deal at the time because people in Europe believed such myths like the world ended the at a certain point, ect.
