A young man by the name of William Webb Ellis attended a school called "Rugby school" located in England, 1823. His friends and him were playing a game very similar to "soccer." They would kick it around on the ground, but when the ball was in the air they could use their hands and play on with their hands until it would hit the floor again, then it was played as "soccer" again. They found a round ball was difficult to carry, so as the game developed and the rules changed, so did the shape of the ball. Thus, today it was a slim ball with grip and versatility.
