you can say han3 yu4.. but that would only be proper if you are talking about the chinese language.

"Chinese" is a foreign word for the Chinese people.

As for the language, they say hanyu(han was the name of an ancient empire in china,"yu" means "language")

As for the people, they call themselves Zhongguoren("zhong"="center,middle","guo"="country,state","ren"="people".

Chinese comes from china.

A new research said the name " China" was the way the Hun's way of calling chinese people. Hun was a tribe which was once neighbor to China and moved westwards to Europe at last.

A nation in china which was near hun was called "chin"("jin"in Pinyin), so they called china "chin".
