XII. I stands for one in Roman numerals, V stands for five, X stands for ten, L for fifty, C for one hundred, D for five hundred, and M for one thousand. You put up to three of any letter that stands for a number that starts with a one, i.e. III is three, CC would be two hundred, and MMM would be three thousand. Now to make four you put an I in front of V, symbolizing five minus one. To make nine one puts an I in front of X, in much the same fashion as four is made. If a letter representing a smaller amount is put in front of a letter representing a larger number, you subtract the smaller from the larger. You can use Roman numerals to represent any number. I'm sure you've seen the year represented by Roman numerals at movies and on tv. For example, 2012 would be written MMXII, or 1776 would be MDCCLXXVI. M= one thousand, D= five hundred, CC= two hundred, L= fifty, XX= twenty, VI= six, so 1000+500+200+50+20+6= 1,776 or 1776. As you can see, it was an inefficient system, which is why our system, in which every numeral from 0-10 represents a different number, overtook it.
