What is A on a 5 dollar note?

Depending on where it is, it could be any number of things:

  • A large A in the seal (only on older bills) indicates it was printed for the Boston Federal Reserve District.
  • An A under the date indicates it's the second printing for that series date
  • An A in one of the bill's corners indicates what part of the printing plate that particular bill occupied.
