nickel
As a coin? A five cent piece or five cents. As an element? It is just called "Nickel", unless you are thinking of an alloy of copper and nickel known as "German silver".
A 1976 nickel is worth face value, which is five cents. It is not worth more due to its age or any other factors.
I would bet money that either your coin has been copper plated, or its been exposed to something that has caused a chemical reaction and changed the color of it.In either case, it will be worth less than a dollar.AnswerI have been looking through my dad's coins and I also found what looks like a 1936 copper Indian head nickel. I wonder????? AnswerAny reasonably smart high-school chemistry student can copper-plate a coin using a battery and some copper sulfate solution. I know, I did it myself many years ago (mea culpa!)
The five cent US coin called "nickel" is now made of 75% copper and 25% nickel The five cent Canadian coin called "nickel" is now made of 94.5% steel, 3.5% copper with 2% pure nickel plating; between 1946 and 1981 the Canadian coins were pure nickel. Nickel is an element made of electrons, protons and neutrons
The short answer is, Don't try. The reason 1943 cents tend to look crummy is that the zinc coating oxidizes and the underlying steel core rusts. Anything you have at home that could be used to clean them will only make the situation worse. At one time it was possible to buy "reprocessed" steel cents that been electrolyzed to remove some of the rust and then were replated with zinc. Unfortunately reprocessed cents are worth almost nothing because they're altered coins, plus they're obviously fake-looking. If you want a nice-looking one for your collection, prices for uncirculated steel cents are quite reasonable; you should be able to get one from a dealer for two to five bucks depending on its mint mark. If you're willing to settle for a circulated coin, these sell for as little as a quarter.
