The heaviest native bird in Australia is officially the Southern cassowary. It is heavier than the emu, averaging 38-48kg in weight, compared to the emu, which ranges between 30 and 45 kg in weight.

The emu is Australia's tallest bird, averaging 1.6 to 2 metres in height. The Southern Cassowary, whilst ranging from 1.5m to just under 2m in height, looks distinctly shorter and stockier when standing next to the emu.
