It is hard to determine the most "famous" food without parameters such as "most liked", "most often bought", etc; however, Vegemite would arguably be the most famous food in Australia because it is distinctive and entirely unique in both flavour and Australian origin.

Although others may cite Tim Tams or Lamingtons as the most famous, they do not have the same reputation outside of Australia; nor do they retail as popularly within Australia.

Australia does not have any "national" foods, as such, but there are several food typical to Australia, and not influenced by the multiculturalism of the country.

  • roast lamb - long a stalwart of Australian households
  • meat pies - not instrinsically Australian at all, but the country does seem to have perfected them
  • Vegemite - a unique, strong-flavoured black spread made from brewer's yeast
  • Tim Tams - another unique, layered chocolate biscuit
  • lamingtons - a small, square sponge cake covered in melted chocolate and dessiccated coconut
  • damper - an old "bush" favourite, commonly cooked by bushmen, stockmen, swagmen and campers - a basic bread made just from plain flour, salt and water, and cooked over an open fire. Damper is a simple bush bread, rather like a large scone, cooked on an open fire and served with butter, honey, or syrup. Together with billy tea (tea boiled in a tin can on an open fire), it was popular among swagmen - itinerant 'bushies' - as well as stockmen and other outback workers in Australia's colonial years. These two items are still popular camping fare today.
  • pavolva - actually a New Zealand dessert but named in Australia, made up of a meringue cake and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit
  • barbequed meats are popular, whether at home, or at parks or beaches
  • ANZAC biscuits - flat biscuits made of rolled oats, flour and golden syrup

It is difficult to determine Australia's most popular dish. The traditional lamb roast with vegetables is a favourite, but so is the more casual barbeque, consisting of sausages, chops and steak. Meat pies used to be a favourite, but these have dwindled in polarity in recent years.

Australia has wonderful fish dishes including mahi mahi. They also have wonderful desserts including lambingtons (chocolate and coconut coated sponge bread, Vovo, Pavlova and Anzac biscuits. Prawn cocktails are great appetizers. Good tucker, mate!

Australia's most popular foods are barbequed meats, particularly steak and lamb chops. Roast chicken and roast lamb are very popular, and roast beef and roast pork are increasing in populariry. Another answer in this section suggests that "Mahi mahi" is a popular dish, but this dish is not even known by most Australians. Lamingtons (not "lambingtons" as suggested by another contributor) are distinctly Australian, as are ANZAC biscuits, but they would not be counted as among the most popular foods. The prawn cocktails also mentioned by another contributor are not very poular, tasty though they are. Australians eat tonnes of prawns a year, but these are usually just eaten as a side dish, not as prawn cocktails. The other suggestion by another contributor of something called "Vovo" is quite off the track. Iced Vovos are a type of biscuit, but they are not at all what one would refer to as most popular foods.
