Here are some of President Obama's official duties.

The US president is the leader of the United States and is our representative to the rest of the world. For example, when foreign leaders come to make an official visit, they come to the White House to meet with the US president to discuss important business and government issues.

The president makes the final decision about our foreign policies. This can include decisions about whether to go to war, or whether to end a war; and decisions about which countries the US should consider allies. He is also the head of state who meets with leaders of other countries at summits, where decisions of global importance are made; he represents the interests of the United States at those meetings.

The president is the Commander in Chief of the US Military. For example, while the U.S. military personnel carried out the mission to find and kill Osama bin Laden, it was the president who directed the mission and gave the order to carry it out. He works directly with the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the military to plan and coordinate all military efforts.

He sets the domestic policy for the country, submitting his agenda to congress and establishing the priorities that he hopes to see enacted while he is in office. He will carry out the steps necessary to influence Congress so that the wishes of the people, as expressed in the democratic process and elections, are, in fact, implemented by Congress.

Finally, as head of the legislative branch of our government, the president selects his cabinet to advise him in various aspects of domestic policy; he also nominates justices for the Supreme Court and the federal courts.
