Benjamin Solomon Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan. His mother, Sonya Carson, had dropped out of school in the third grade and "married" the already married Robert Solomon Carson, a Baptist minister from Tennessee 15 years her senior. Sonya Carson had her son Curtis at age 11, while having Ben Carson at age 13. When Carson was only eight, his parents separated, and Mrs. Carson was left to raise Benjamin and his older brother, Curtis, on her own. Carson's father was already married and returned to his wife and children. She worked at two, sometimes three, jobs at a time to provide for her boys.
Carson married Candy Rustin-whom he met at Yale-in 1975; she holds a M.B.A. degree and is an accomplished musician, and both are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, an evangelical Christian denomination. They have three sons, Murray, Benjamin Jr., and Rhoeyce.
